Surfing Sunset Beach

Alright so today was a good day. Instead of getting a haircut, an oil change, or getting a carwash, I finally got my ass out of bed and went to the beach! It’s been for-e-ver since I’ve been, and since Summer is around the corner, the weather has been looking more than opportune. I also decided today was the day to finally take my surfboard out of the garage and catch some waves.

I opted to go to Sunset Beach instead of Zuma (where I usually go), to test the conditions over there. After getting an iced vanilla latte and sex wax, I went up Topanga and followed it for 20ish minutes until I made a left onto PCH. Sunset Beach is right after the intersection of Sunset Blvd. and PCH (heading South), next to Gladstones. I didn’t want to keep making U-Turns, so if you don’t mind spending $7 on parking next to the beach, you should definitely park in the Gladstones parking lot. The beach was rather busy today, so parking on PCH was not an option.

Sunset is definitely a great spot for long boarders. I read a review saying “if you have a board shorter than 8 feet don’t bother,” and to set the record straight, that is completely untrue. I have a 7′2″ board and was totally fine out there. Although most surfers who go to Sunset Beach are longboarders, there are a variety of shortboarders and paddleboarders who make their way out there. There isn’t any ‘local’ heat either, and all are friendly and share the waves. Of course you still need to be courteous and what not, but you should be anyway. The only ‘downside’ of my surfing experience was my head being grazed by the bottom of someone’s surfboard because he wasn’t looking. Good thing he was really hot or else it would have been a lot worse for him haha. But aside from that minor situation, all is well on Sunset. It is a little bit rocky on shore, but once you paddle out, it doesn’t pose a problem. The waves are ideal for beginners, so I suggest anyone who is just beginning or wants to try surfing to go out onto Sunset.

I was also happy to see more women surfers out today. I seldom see much in Zuma, so its good to see some of them rippin’ it.

And here is a pic of Sunset I found online. Yes, its that gorgeous.
